Freddie Mercury, the singer of the rock band Queen, settled in Montreux where the group had bought Mountain Recording Studio and where he learnt to appreciate the peace and quiet. He recorded his last album "Made in Heaven" at the Montreux studio.

The son of a British official of Indian origin, Freddie Mercury (1946-1991), was born on the island of Zanzibar and moved to London where he began his fruitful collaboration with Queen in 1970. 

At the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1978, the singer recorded the album "Jazz" with Queen. He fell in love with Montreux and Lake Geneva and decided to settle here. He said, among other things, "If you want peace of soul, come to Montreux".

For more than 100 years, the Jungfrau railway has been making its journey to Europe’s highest-altitude railway station at 3454 metres a.s.l. – right at the heart of the UNESCO heritage site “Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch”. All through the year, the cog railway runs steeply up through a tunnel to the Jungfraujoch from Kleine Scheidegg. 

The tunnel leading up from the station Eigergletscher is seven kilometres in length and was built between 1896 and 1912. One stop within the tunnel offers spectacular views onto the glacier world outside through windows in the Eiger North Face. On the summit, visitors are greeted by a high-Alpine wonder world made of ice, snow and rocks. All of this can be marvelled at from the viewing platforms “Sphinx” and “Plateau” on the Aletsch glacier or from the “Ice Palace”.

With the opening of the "Eiger Express" on 5 December 2020, the Jungfrau Railways' V-Bahn project was completed, enabling the journey from Interlaken to the Jungfraujoch in just one and a half hours. From the terminal in Grindelwald, a 3S cableway takes you directly to the station Eigergletscher (Eiger Glacier) in 15 minutes. Not many cities have managed to retain their historic features quite as successfully as Bern, the capital of Switzerland. The Houses of Parliament (Bundeshaus) rise above the city just a stone's throw away from the railway station. The doors to the Houses of Parliament are open to visitors most of the time, and if you're lucky you might even bump into a member of parliament in the streets of the city. In summer the River Aare provides an opportunity for the ultimate bathing experience; very good, experienced swimmers allow themselves to drift along in the clean Aare while enjoying a view of the Houses of Parliament. The Botanical Gardens are also located along the river, as is the Dählhölzli Zoo and the old Matte district. Bern and bears, the cities heraldic beast, are inseparable. A visit to the Bear Park, habitat of a family of bears, is a must-do.

The sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso in Orselina above Locarno is the most famous place of pilgrimage in the Italian part of Switzerland. It is rooted in the ancient tradition of votive gifts.

A picture-perfect medieval town on a small hill with a castle and three totally different museums: In Gruyères, 800-year-old regional history and culture meet Oscar-winning aliens and Buddhist sculptures.

The historical town of Gruyères, Greyerz in German, has preserved its Medieval character up until today. The old comital residence lies on a hill above the river Saane. The castle, which dates back to the 13th century, is today a museum depicting 800 years of regional architecture, history and culture.

The Furka steam railway mountain route takes visitors back to the golden age of steam the railway in Switzerland.

The journey leads from Realp to the magnificent mountain landscape of the Central Alps and on over the historic route of Glacier Express to Oberwald in Canton Valais. The intermediate stop at Furka station takes travellers to the routes highest point of 2160 metres a.s.l.

In the 19th century and up to the start of the 20th century, the glacier at the source of the Rhone stretched as far as the valley floor by Gletsch and could at times be seen by guests at the Grand Hotel Glacier du Rhône. A visit to the ice grotto by the Hotel Belvédère and the emerging glacial lake is still worthwhile today.

Since the opening of the modern-day Furka pass road 150 years ago, thousands of tourists have come to see the unique mountain panorama around the Rhone Glacier. Today they park at the Hotel Belvédère and walk about 200 metres to the entrance of the ice grotto, which is re-drilled each year. The glacier looks whitish-grey, but inside the 100m long tunnel and the ice chamber it glows in magically fine shades of blue. The glacier moves 30-40 metres each year, sometimes more than 10cm per day. A lot of ice also melts in summer – while the ice grotto is more than 100m long at the start of the season in June, by the end of the summer it is reduced to 70m. The panoramic glacier viewing platform will soon be joined by the new glacial lake platform, as a new lake forms at the end of the glacier.
